Ryan Park MPI am writing to express my concern regarding a recent article published by ABC news about the Queanbeyan Hospital. The article in question states that the Queanbeyan Hospital, a public hospital that provides services to women in rural NSW, has "no support framework'' available for surgical abortion care.This follows the ongoing investigation ABC has been performing across rural NSW and is the second hospital this month to have been shown not providing essential and lifesaving reproductive healthcare to women in rural NSW.Women in rural areas often face unique barriers to healthcare, including socioeconomic and accessibility concerns. NSW state law and Australia's federal abortion laws currently do not appear to be adequate when it comes to addressing these concerns.It should not be accepted that hospital board members, or even OB/GYNs working in publicly funded hospitals, should be given the opportunity to refuse or “conscientiously object” to a lifesaving medical procedure. Particularly when, for OB/GYNs that procedure is part of their specialist profession.I would like to encourage NSW Health to perform an inquest into the reasons these NSW hospitals are refusing to provide abortion care for those seeking it, and request these findings be made public to increase awareness of this issue, and to ensure patients are provided with the information they need for self-advocacy regarding their medical concerns.Kind regards,Article source:
